Sina News is back. I'm now checking the other sources...
2  Xiaoma Cidian / Bug Reports / Re: Newspapers, again. on: December 07, 2011, 02:09:22 AM
These newspapers seem to have removed the RSS feeds. Do you know any good RSS feeds for Chinese news?
3  Xiaoma Cidian / Site comments / Re: word ratings on: October 20, 2011, 12:55:31 AM
There is already a word rating in place; however the current data is probably based on classic literature books, and articles that are more than 10 years old, with many references to politics and scientific terminology. This data would have to be updated for the modern language usage (which evolves rapidly), for instance based on Google search (e.g. number of occurences found for each word). I will try to update the data accordingly, but please be patient...

I have modified my scripts, it should be better now, although you may sometimes have to reload the page once or twice. Please tell me if it works for you.
5  Xiaoma Cidian / Bug Reports / Re: China Daily Newspapers on: September 09, 2011, 12:58:04 AM
Thanks for notifying the issue. The newspapers often change the contents format of their pages, and it's hard to follow and update the site accordingly. I will try to have a look and update (it possible).

New update today:

  • Updated and fixed Chinese Daily News sources. Xinhuanet has been removed due to the lack of a working RSS server.
  • Improved performance when searching for pinyin expressions.
  • It's now possible to pinyin expressions without spaces: "beijing" or "nihao ma" are now both correct when searching by pinyin.
  • Slightly updated the user interface.
  • Updated the dictionary with the latest data from CC-CEDICT. Many characters have been added.

7  Xiaoma Cidian / Site comments / Re: Oyster (hao2) tradtional (variant) wrong? on: September 25, 2010, 07:05:38 AM
Xiaoma Cidian lists as a variant, but not as the traditional variant. In fact, Xiaoma Cidian does not indicate the kind of variant it displays. If you click at the link "U+869D" on top, which leads to the Unihan database repository, you will see that is listed as a semantic variant of -- not a traditional variant. Since the information of the variants at Xiaoma Cidian comes directly from Unihan, you can see at Xiaoma too.

Note that 袖珍汉语词典 (Xiuzhen hanyu cidian) indicates at a possible variant for , but this is missing in Unihan.

The indication of the kind of variant (semantic, traditional form, Z...) would be a nice addition to Xiaoma Cidian. And, as you mention, I will also add as a variant for .

More updates today:

  • Fixed some bugs and improved reliability.
  • Added a feature to list characters by strokes count.
  • Added a list of characters difficult to find when searching from radicals. It can be very helpful when searching for a character where the radical is not obvious, but without traversing the whole list of characters.
  • Reworked HSK lists: now the list of characters include all characters defined for a given level and not only single-char words. The list of words has an option to display all words, single-char words only or compounds only.
  • Added a link to this note on the front page.

9  Xiaoma Cidian / Site comments / Re: What does "CL" stand for? on: July 05, 2010, 06:48:18 AM
Hi there,

Thanks for your comments! CL stands for 'classifier'. This is not really a new 'feature', but a nice addition from the guys working on the CC-CEDICT, the open project Chinese-English dictionary which Xiaoma Cidian is based on.

Here is the explanation from the CC-CEDICT documentation:
Quote from: CC-CEDICT

Classifiers (also called “Measure words”) can be listed using the following syntax:
避風港 避风港 [bi4 feng1 gang3] /haven/refuge/harbor/CL: 座[zuo4],個|个[ge4]/

Classifiers follow the 'reference' syntax, are prefixed by 'CL:' and separated by a comma (no additional spacing).

The classifier words itself can be described using:
/classifier for small round things (peas, bullets, peanuts, pills, grains etc)/

Btw, some more features upcoming this week to Xiaoma -- stay tuned Wink

12  Xiaoma Cidian / Site comments / Re: 后 - is not recognised by the dictionary on: May 21, 2010, 03:07:03 AM

It seems that there is a bug here when a character has itself as the traditional form. Here, the 2 traditional forms of 后 are both "后" and "後", and this confuses the engine. I will issue a fix so that this behaviour does not happen again.

New update today:
  • Improved performance. The queries shoud be much faster, especially when searching from English words.
  • Minor interface fixes.

14  Xiaoma Cidian / News and updates / Re: Updates on: December 05, 2009, 09:01:08 AM
New update today:
  • Updated the user interface:
    • Added fade effects for the home page 'random' character, and added a popup window with the English definition for that character;
    • No more than 15 characters on the same line when displaying all characters for a given pinyin value;
    • Now you can enter the Unicode code-point in the "Search by Chinese characters" text field. It must be a 4 or 5 hexadecimal digits expression. Try typing "9A6C" for instance, it will be replaced by the character .
  • Updated the list of variants characters with the latest version of Unihan
  • Fixed the number of strokes for (it is incorrect in the Unihan database). Previously 11 (probably for historical reasons), now 12 (thanks to James G. for reporting this issue!)
  • Fixed a few minor bugs
  • More updates to the dictionary from CC-CEDICT. Now there are more than 104000 entries in the dictionary.

15  Xiaoma Cidian / News and updates / Re: Updates on: December 01, 2009, 04:17:27 AM
New update today:
  • Search by pinyin: fixed searching for exrepssions with 'erhua' endings. These pinyin expressions are now equivalent: '"jinr", "jin r", "jin r5", "jin er5". However, searching for "jin er" will not return "jinr".
  • Search by English: will display the best matches first. This will for instance allow to find the definition for "idiom" without checking for 2000 or more results...
